- Body – usually made of cast iron. Provides the framework for the valve and directs the flow.
- Gate/Wedge – the part that actually stops the flow. Often has a sealing surface on the bottom to create a tight shutoff when closed.
- Stem – connects the gate to the actuator on top that lifts it up/down. May be rising or non-rising.
- Packing – seals around the valve stem to prevent leakage. Usually includes packing rings and gland followers.
- Actuator – manual handwheel, electric, pneumatic, etc. Provides the force to move the gate.
- Bonnet – encloses and protects the stem, packing, and gland.
- End Connections – flanged, threaded, socket weld, etc. Allow valve to be connected to pipeline.
- Pressure rating – depends on size, materials of construction, and temperature.
- Testing – hydrostatic shell testing, seat leakage testing, etc. to validate performance.
